Abstract

Cecil John Rhodes, mining tycoon and later prime minister of the Cape Colony, was behind one of South Africa’s most infamous political misadventures: a clandestine operation against the Transvaal Republic. A disaster, it led to Rhodes’s resignation as prime minister and drove Anglo-Boer relations to a new low, helping to usher in the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902).
