For many farmers, life in South Africa is getting tougher. Like all citizens, they have to contend with the financial impact of a struggling economy. They face terrifying crime when farm attackers and stock thieves strike. Many have suffered multiple years of drought, which has brought them to the brink. And on top of this, politics in South Africa has not always been kind to the farming sector. Despite these challenges, many farmers are still contributing to building a better nation. Like the almost one million people who have added their voices to the #ImStaying group on Facebook, a vehicle for those who choose to grow and improve South Africa, many farmers are not ready to give up on the country they love and call home. Farmer’s Weekly asked some of the top farmers of the past year why they choose to stay in South Africa.
