Abstract

Orbital and ocular trauma is a common cause of visual impairment and blindness worldwide. In South Africa these cases often present to casualties and eye clinics. Compared to other countries such as the USA, Japan and Australia, orbital trauma in South Africa is much more likely to be assault-related. Here, we present an unusual case of orbital trauma, and discuss the important components of managing these patients. Although these injuries can initially be disfiguring, through a good approach and correct management, the outcome can be cosmetically good, and it may be possible to save the eye.
