Abstract

Many lawyers, judges even, want to write books. Some do. There are even some who end up writing best-selling novels. But surely no member of the judiciary has ever written the judgment in a matter where he or she didn’t hear a single witness, let alone a word of the case put up by either side? Until, that is, the Tanzanian case of Charles Chama, heard by the high court in Tanzania more than a decade ago, and newly under the scrutiny of that country’s highest court.
