There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you. (Maya Angelou)

Carl Rogers (1961, p. 32) in talking about the shifts and learnings he made in his professional life, states that ‘…in my early professional years I was asking the question: how can I treat, or cure, or change this person? Now I would rephrase the question in this way: how can I provide a relationship which this person can use for his own personal growth?’ Counselling is, as Carl Rogers reflects, about creating a safe and enabling space for a sacred relationship to form between counsellor or therapist and client, thereby allowing for explorative healing and personal growth. Elements of Counselling is a handbook or toolkit, if you like, that serves as a step by step reference guide for practitioners, from psychologists to lay counsellors, in creating the kind of therapeutic relationship that Rogers spoke about.
