Abstract

The old man didn’t have long to live. He had no friends to talk to, no family to comfort him. He only had his dog. The Nurse Manager smuggled the dog into the ward one night. It was against the rules but, for her, the need to do the right thing and make a difference to this man in his last days, was more important, so she went ahead and broke them. She got into trouble for it, but said she’d do it again in a heartbeat if it was the right thing for a patient. She’s still a Nurse Manager and her bosses realise that they need more people like her. This Nurse Manager was appointed using a new approach to recruitment – one that assesses people on their innate strengths, what they love to do and what they are energised by. Strengths-based selection is being adopted by the financial services, hospitality, retail and healthcare sectors. Why? Because the organisations that use it see a clear return on investment fast.
