Abstract

Palaeomagnetic analysis of 80 samples from 13 sites in the Richtersveld Subprovince, together with 40Ar/39Ar measurements on selected samples give the following results:

(a) three sites in the Vioolsdrif quartz diorite revealed a single component ofremanent magnetization, whichisnorth-easterlywithanegativeinclination, VINE-(D = 46, I= 56, K = 258, ∝95 = 8, N = 3). One site in the Vioolsdrif amphibolite and one site from the Vioolsdrif leucogranite dykes yielded a similar northeasterly, negative inclination direction. Detailed alternating field (A.F.) and thermal demagnetization indicate that single domain magnetite is the remanence carrier for the Vioolsdrif quartz diorite, whereas multidomain magnetite is the carrier for the amphibolite and leucogranite dykes.
