One of the great joys of working as an agricultural journalist is the opportunities we sometimes get to travel to the very remote areas of different countries to meet farmers who live in places somewhat forgotten by the fast passage of time. Often it is nothing other than the stubborn insistence of farmers that ‘what isn’t broken doesn’t need fixing’ that keeps traditional ways of doing things alive long after more modern solutions have been commercialised by the agricultural technology and machinery giants. But other times, farmers stick to seemingly impractical and outdated ways because the end result justifies the hard labour.
