Abstract

Growing up on a smallholding or a farm, and leading a seemingly carefree childhood with limited, if any crime incidents, was a privilege that many of today's adults enjoyed when they were children. It is hard to accept that this lifestyle has changed in rural communities, where security fences and doors have become the norm, rather than the exception on farms. Even though crime is pro rata much higher in urban settings in South Africa than in rural communities, the brutality and violence that accompany farm attacks and murders make for a topic that necessitates additional attention.
