Abstract

Cape Town prides itself as one of South Africa's best-governed cities in the country, but only a few kilometres from the majestic Table Mountain are the shanty towns of Cape Town. Living on the Cape Flats, which consist of a number of poverty-stricken areas with names such as Bishop Lavis, Steenberg, Hanover Park, Elsies River, Bonteheuwel and Manenberg, is not for the faint-hearted. In these areas, with tiny overcrowded houses and equally tiny blocks upon blocks of flats, there is a lot of hardship. Poverty and unpleasant living conditions serve as a breeding ground for gang and other unsavoury activities. As many low income parents have few choices but to leave children unattended while working, many children growing up on the Cape Flats are exposed to criminal activities from a young age and fall victim to rapists, murderers or the stray bullets from rival gangs.
