Abstract

Since opening in mid-2019, the V&A Waterfront’s new, improved swing bridge has provided safe transit for hundreds of thousands of pedestrians transiting between the Alfred and Victoria basins. It replaced an older swing bridge installed in 1997 that was struggling to keep pace with rising foot traffic. Prior to that, this section of water was traversed for decades by the so-called Penny Ferry, a simple rowing boat that plied back and forth with its small group of passengers.
