Abstract

About 20 years ago I entered an old-age home for the first time. In my lifetime I had never given any thought to old people. I had no idea what happened to them or where they went. I did not even know if I liked them. My first impression after entering the old age home was one of shock. These people did not respond to my greetings. They had no facial expressions and were totally uninterested in their surroundings. It took me a while to realise that their whole lives revolved around sitting in their rooms and going to the lounge and dining room, each day unfolding as the previous one. Many of these elderly people have families that never contact them or visit them.
