Abstract

As we grow older, most of us fear dementia, the progressive deterioration of the functions of the brain. This decrease in the normal functioning of the brain diminishes the intellectual capacity of the affected person, who loses the ability to reason normally, and experiences loss of memory. Dementia is an incurable disease with a long preclinical period. However, despite the normal emotional reaction to the diagnosis by the patient and family, a planning session to discuss the future is vital. The patient and his or her family and significant others who will play a role in future care should participate in this discussion.
