Abstract

Baboons are large, iconic primates occurring throughout Africa. Their omnivorous diet, agility, dexterity and exploratory behaviour have enabled them to cope with the reduction of their natural habitat while adapting to human-modified landscapes and earned them the unenviable reputation as one of Africa’s leading pest species. Baboons may raid crops, houses, tourist lodges and even individual people carrying food – all of which provide access to high caloric human foods with minimal effort. In addition, baboons may supplement their largely vegetarian diet by occasionally killing and consuming a variety of small vertebrates and invertebrates.
