Pancreatitis is an inflammatory condition of the pancreas that can present as acute, recurrent acute or chronic pancreatitis (CP). Acute pancreatitis (AP) is characterized by two of the following criteria as per the revised Atlanta 2 international consensus: a sudden onset of epigastric pain, elevated lipase (or pancreas-specific amylase) of three times the upper limit of normal and characteristic findings on preferably a contrasted computed tomography, MRI or ultrasound.1 In CP, irreversible fibroinflammation and replacement of pancreatic parenchyma tissue by fibrous connective tissue result in pain and progressive exocrine and endocrine insufficiency.2
