Possessing the longest coastline on the African mainland, Somalia has been cursed by a hot desert environment and factional fighting that has led to devastating civil war and terrorism. The installation of the first elected national government, in March 2017, was a significant step forward. Somalia’s most famous ‘industry’ in the past decade has been piracy off the Horn of Africa, which was repressed by an international maritime coalition in 2011. However, the hijacking of ships in 2017 showed the piracy threat has not disappeared. Piracy will return when the policing ships depart. African Union troops and the military of Kenya, Somalia’s neighbour to the south, keep the Somali Islamic militant group al-Shabaab from even greater destruction of lives and property.
