Abstract

In the last ten years, Nigeria has shown some commitments to becoming self-sufficient in rice production. The country’s rising import bills of over $US1billion per annum on rice has been adduced to several factors. This article reviews empirical literature on rice studies, identified the key underlying factors responsible for the domestic demand-supply gap and high rice import bills for in Nigeria. Implications for the development of Nigeria’s rice sector were discussed.
