Abstract

It is widely known that success in animal breeding and good management depends on sound recording practices. Since the days of Robert Bakewell (1725 to 1795), stud breeders have realised that good qualities can be replicated if pedigrees are known, that these qualities or traits need to be defined and ultimately measured (and recorded), and that selection leads to superior progeny.
