In my 20 years of identifying competence and potential in the South African labour market, I have seen increasing talent emerge from previously marginalised and excluded demographic groups. The 17th Annual Commission for Employment Equity Report, published on 9th May 2017, reflects that we still have work to do in the area of equal representation at all levels of the national workforce. The Report revealed that the representation of people with disabilities in our national workforce, which is estimated to be four million, has dropped. Alarmingly, this decrease in representation comes almost two decades after the Employment Equity Act of 1998 came into effect to address this issue.
