In the 1970s and 1980s, Arthur Gilbert tried various crosses to establish the family beef enterprise on the farm Ottershaw. The crossbred progeny performed well, thanks to hybrid vigour. But by the late 1980s, the cows were all crossbreeds and the effort needed to ‘correctly’ crisscross breeds was becoming greater. To solve the problem, the pair decided to simplify their system by using a single, composite breed, the Beefmaster, and in 1990 founded Ottershaw Beefmaster Stud. They started with 90 selected F1 females approved by the Beefmaster Cattle Breeders’ Society of South Africa, and today run a 600-strong herd. Until his recent retirement, wellknown consultant Erwin Church advised them on their selection.
