Abstract

Web 2.0 technologies, such as wiki’s, can play a key role in delivering education and promoting access to educational resources among students. The purpose of the study was to establish the perceptions of students making use of a wiki as to how effective it is to improve learning in an undergraduate course at a higher education institution in the Eastern Cape. The study made use of a quantitative survey approach. An online questionnaire was distributed to 113 second year students registered for an undergraduate database course. A convenience sampling technique was used with a response rate of 40%. Descriptive statistics, including frequencies and percentages, were used to analyses the data collected. The study found that the majority of students perceived the wiki as an effective tool to improve learning during the course and engage with the course material in more depth. The study recommends that a wiki can be used to improve knowledge management in some undergraduate courses at higher education level.
