Evaluation of accurate tidal volume as displayed on the Avea™ ventilator using predetermined neonatal ventilator settings
Tidal volumes were evaluated on Avea™ ventilators to establish and develop a set of parameters that could be used for quality control and verification of accuracy. Thirty Avea™ ventilators, three (3) flow sensors and two different test lungs were connected respectively and set to generally used neonatal ventilator settings. Tidal volumes were measured for all thirty ventilators. No significant differences were found between the mean tidal volumes measured for both test lungs. (p=0.1856). The study concluded that the mean tidal volumes calculated could be used as a quality control for the Avea™ ventilator and its dedicated proximal flow sensor.

Resonant inductive charging system for a battery operated automatic guided vehicle
Wireless transfer technology has become an effective and reliable option to replace the conventional wire transfer technology. The topology involves a power transmitter connected to the grid, and a power receiver attached to the battery. A wireless power transfer system should satisfy three conditions, namely high efficiency, large air gaps and high power. Recent studies have provided wireless mid-range charging technology to transfer power through resonant inductive coupling.
The theory of resonant inductive coupling has therefore been used as the main technology in the design and implementation of a wireless charging system that was successfully implemented on an Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV). The intention was to wirelessly transform and transfer an alternating oscillating waveform into a DC voltage, to demonstrate instantaneous power transfer.

The role of Sesotho language and culture in shaping identities of speakers : a case of Basotho in the Free State and Lesotho
This research examines the relationship between the language and the culture of the Basotho people residing in the Free State province of South Africa and Lesotho. The paper argues that culture is defined through the language spoken by the community and this is interpreted within the context of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. The researchers used a qualitative research design in the collection and analysis of data. Data collection instruments employed were semi-structured interviews and group discussion. Descriptive data analysis was employed on the data generated from adult Basotho men and women, students, academics and language practitioners. The locations for primary data generation were Ladybrand and Qwaqwa in the Free State province and Maseru in Lesotho. The sample in the empirical part of the study comprised five participants from Ladybrand, ten from QwaQwa and ten from Maseru. The findings cemented the argument that language defines the culture and the identity of its speakers. It was concluded that the conscious preservation, practice and transmission of language, culture and identity by adults to younger generations will ensure that the Basotho language not only survives but thrives in the future.

The influence of radio and newspaper advertisements on the buying decisions of consumers
Radio and newspaper advertisements are used by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to create awareness about the existence of businesses, their products and services, as well as to communicate with potential consumers. The present study, localised in the city of Welkom, Free State province, focuses on the effectiveness of radio and newspaper advertisements as promotional tools to enhance the profitability of SMEs. The main objective of the study was to investigate the influence of radio and newspaper advertising on consumer buying decisions. It also investigated in particular the effect of radio and newspaper advertisements on the decision making of consumers regarding products or services. The relationships between consumer age and gender and decision making were also examined. Study findings revealed that radio advertisements do not appear to influence the buying decisions of consumers as most consumers are passive listeners and do not concentrate on such advertisements. Contrastingly, there is wide agreement that newspaper advertisements do influence buying decisions. One implication from the study is that SMEs might increasingly consider using newspaper advertising for more effective consumer communication.
