It is a great honour to be asked to speak at this colloquium on . I understand the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 (the "Constitution") as urging us to eradicate poverty, and for me and others here, the instrument we have available to us is the law. The theme has particular resonance to me, and to those of us who have battled poverty in various ways and on a number of terrains. I thank you, the organisers of this colloquium, for the opportunity to address this subject at this forum.
