It is eleven years since the second edition of this work was published and, as in many other fields of the law, a great many things have since changed in the law relating to bail, making the demand for an updated and modernized new edition inevitable. Bail forms an important part of the law of criminal procedure, not only in respect of the crucial impact it has on the freedom of the individual but also as a first introduction for members of the public (including complainants) to the criminal justice system. This enthusiasm is seldom still visible when the trial eventually commences months later.
