Abstract

The article discusses the problem of the control of police violence from a comparative perspective between Brazil and South Africa. The author's premise is that these two countries, despite major economic, political and social differences, have a remarkable potential for co-operating in overcoming the problem of police abuse directed first and foremost at the black and mixed race populations. The topic of police control is herein addressed based on its South African version - where an actor entirely autonomous actor is called upon to investigate police crimes and on Brazilian experiments of unmediated approach between the police and the population, with special mention of a police experiment in the state of Acre.
