Abstract

The upcoming local government elections are a critical milestone for democracy in South Africa. Perhaps for the first time, there will be real choice and in quite a number of municipalities, it will be a close call. This highlights the provinces and regions that will be watched closely. Political parties have selected candidates, drawn up manifestos and chosen election slogans. The ANC is counting on its national transformative agenda to carry the day while the DA is now boasting a record in governance at both provincial and municipal levels. In this we are serious about bringing the debate back to the real issues, namely the quality of service delivery, good governance and the accountability of local leaders to local communities. We argue that local elections and campaigns should not be replays of national politics and campaigns.
