Abstract

The latest data on service delivery protests, published in this issue and on our website (www.mlgi.org.za), indicate that protests are becoming more frequent, more widespread and more often violent. Conclusions with regard to local government's share of the responsibility should be drawn cautiously but it is clear that municipalities must share in the blame. Everybody knows that there is no single silver bullet and a broad strategy and commitment across all three spheres of government is required. Part of that is better coordination at national level. Municipalities are not aided by confusing and overlapping regulation.
