Buren-Marsch : the old Transvaal anthem in German dressThis article discusses a march for brass ensemble that was written and published in Germany between 1901 and 1904 by a composer by the name of August Bernhard Ueberwasser (1866-1925). The march is noteworthy because it incorporates a complete version of the old Transvaal national anthem, together with a German translation of the original Dutch text as well as a less literal version of the words. This forgotten piece of music provides evidence of the solidarity that existed in Germany with the Boer Republics in their struggle against the British Empire a century ago.
