Abstract

In (1998) lewer André P. Brink kommentaar op die historikus wat meer klem lê op feite en waarheid, en die belangrikheid van mondelinge tradisie onderskat. Hierdie artikel bied 'n intertekstuele studie van die tekste en geografie wat Brink beïnvloed het gedurende die kreatiewe proses van . Die opvallendste invloed is dié van die geskiedenis van Gamkaskloof, soos opgeteken in B.M. du Toit se (1974). Die fokus is op hoe 'n alternatiewe lesing bied tot die offisiële geskiedenis, waarin daar 'n onderwaardering is van die orale weergawe van diegene wie se geskiedenis opgeteken word.
