Abstract

During this appreciative inquiry into the pedagogical attributes of Gerhardus Bosch, an experienced biology teacher at the Christelike en Nasionale Sekondêre Meisieskool Oranje in Bloemfontein, South Africa, interviews were conducted with six learners. Six appreciative questions were asked and seven of Bosch's prominent pedagogical attributes were identified from the learners' responses. The attributes are discussed and compared with those indicated by educational sources as being part of the practice of excellent teachers. The first phase of the appreciative inquiry cycle, discovery, is represented by the first five of the questions and the second phase, the dream phase, by the last question. The seven attributes identified from the interviews are used to identify the positive core of Bosch's pedagogy and to design a profile of his excellent teaching as part of his legacy to present to future generations of educators. This profile might inspire others to make his legacy their destination.
