Abstract

This article investigates the importance of language when constructing space and identity in a postmodern Afrikaans poetry text, . The insights in of Ashcroft, Griffiths and Tiffin (eds) (1995) regarding the manner in which colonised societies employ the imperialist cultures for transformation purposes are primarily applied. First, it focuses on the relationship between character and space, particularly on the ownership of land, the concept of the insider and outsider and the creation of space through narrative. Secondly, the article also reflects on the manner in which space is sanctioned by language and the transformational power embedded in language. The focal point is the innovative language created by the poet in order to bring about reconciliation in postapartheid South Africa and the nature of identity formation made possible through that language.
