Abstract

An outbreak of pneumonic plague in an urban Native location in the Orange Free State is descriptionbed. Nine cases occurred in the location and two in a subsidiary outbreak on a farm. The administrative measures which were taken to control the outbreak consisted of the enforcement of quarantine and the giving of live avirulent vaccine. Concentrated serum was also given as a prophylactic measure to close contacts. Antirodent work was carried out in the affected areas. The use of serum as a preventive measure is discussed. A case of proved pneumonic plague in which recovery occurred is descriptionbed.
