Abstract

The pressure in inside the pleural cavity varies with posture. The usual custom of mentioning a particular intrapleural pressure wIthout specifying the position of the patient is therefore misleading. The intrapleural pressure is least when the patient lies in the lateral position with the pneumothorax side uppermost. It is greatest when he lies upon the pneumothorax side. It is intermediate when the patients lies prone, supine or sits up. The mechanism of the variation of pressure with posture is descriptionbed.
