Abstract

*A paper read at the South African Medical Congress, Johannesburg, September 1952. The anatomy of the pulmonary segments is descriptionbed and a plea is made for the use of a standardized nomenclature. The pulmonary segments and the approach to them are descriptionbed, as well as some of the difficulties in their surgical removal. The principles underlying pulmonary resection are conservation of normal lung tissue and the removal of only the affected parts. The scope of pulmonary resection has been extended to patients who are either not fit enough to undergo a more extensive resection or who require bilateral pulmonary operations.
