Abstract

This paper sets out the historical background which led to the discovery of the relationship between the occurrence of mottled enamel in teeth (dental fluorosis) and the presence of relatively high concentrations of fluorine compounds ,in drinking water and eventually to the use of artificially fluoridated water in the epidemiological control of dental caries.
