"As a nation, we have been able to build on our past successes. The completion of the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) in Sutherland established our competence and capability in delivering a world-class optical astronomical facility.

"We are now finalising the Karoo Array Telescope (KAT-7) which comprises seven radio astronomy dishes near Carnavon in the Northern Cape. This is the precursor to the MeerKAT which will consist of 80 radio astronomy dishes," says Minister Naledi Pandor, Minister of Science and Nechnolody.
