Abstract

To qualify as a proper South African you have to be able to tick the following off on the universal list: love the sun, devoted weekly braai fan, football Friday and rugby Saturday fan (alright I will admit, any sporting weekend in general). Now imagine South Africa without the Olympic medallist, Penny Heyns. No Beast on the rugby field to make the opposition quiver to their core as a whole stadium echoes his name. No Hashim Amla to save the day. No Siphiwe Tshabalala to cause excitement as Bafana Bafana goes for the goal. Imagine a country with no sport stars. Impossible, right? This could have very well been true if there was not a link between the talent and the profession.
