Abstract

Much has been said on tariff and codes, but we have been frustrated by the Competition Commission ban on health tariff negotiation. The proposed Pricing Negotiating Forum has not yet seen the light and the Minister of Health has threatened price regulation. Health care costs in South Africa (and the rest of the world), continue to spiral upwards in an unaffordable fashion. Specialists and hospitals are purported to be "cost drivers". But non-health care costs of medical schemes and medical scheme administrators are siphoning off loads of money for administration, brokers fees and managed care services.
