Abstract

Sexual dysfunction is common in patients with schizophrenia; systematic studies have revealed that the condition is highly prevalent in both untreated and treated schizophrenic patients affecting 30 - 80% of females and 45 - 80% of men. There are a number of possible reasons for the higher prevalence of sexual dysfunction in schizophrenic patients than in patients treated for other mental illnesses, including the effects of treatment, the core psychopathology and the long term duration of the disorder and co-morbid physical conditions.
