Abstract

Gynaecomastia is the abnormal enlargement of the mammary gland in males. It is an important, undervalued, underestimated and underreported common hormonal side effect of all antipsychotic medications including typical and atypical antipsychotics. Gynaecomastia has been reported to cause embarrassment for the individual, bring about low self-esteem; poor compliance and frequent relapse. Though gynaecomastia is underreported in the Nigerian and African medical literature, this case report provides evidence of this phenomenon in a Nigerian patient receiving antipsychotics. In this setting, no study has been found to have reported unilateral or bilateral gynaecomastia induced by chlorpromazine.
