Twenty-three percent of all reported cancers in women are of the uterine cervix.1 The age standardised incidence rate for South Africa is in the region of 35/100 000 women years. This represents one of the highest incidence rates in the world. Cervix cancer caused an estimated 3700 deaths in South Africa during 2002.
