I was reading a book I'd borrowed from a friend the other day. It was an enjoyable paperback, nothing special - so I was slightly surprised when I flipped it over and saw the R200 pricetag. Most middle-class consumers would pay up without batting an eyelid; some might buy the read and skip Saturday night's dinner out; but most South Africans simply wouldn't be able to afford the book. It seems that reading has become a luxury in our country.
