To gain some perspective before we look to the future, it's important to look back and take stock. Over the past 10 years a lot has changed. It was only late 2001, that the iPod launched, Facebook was a figment of a 17-year old's imagination, only 32% of South Africans owned cell phones. We had no idea we were going to host the World Cup. 2.6-million people had access to the Internet in South Africa. Thabo Mbeki was embarking on a stable first term as president. Google was a college experiment, the global banking system was 'indestructible' and consumers believed and depended on brands and big business.
