Abstract

Calls within the African context for re-writing the Bible not only fail to address adequately the hermeneutical issues, but are balanced by other calls for rereading the Bible. Rather than investing in a new sacred scripture to replace the Bible, the crisis surrounding its interpretation in Africa needs to be addressed, with responsibility both towards the biblical texts and today's Bible reading communities. It is important to investigate how such rereading can be done to achieve the goal for which re-writing was (is) proposed: disentangling the Bible from patterns and practices of domination.
