TAX RESIDENCE Expat workers encouraged to stay longer in South Africa By JACKIE CAMERON AMENDMENTS to South Africa's income tax law in terms of the definition of a 'resident' - expected to be promulgated by the end of the year - have been designed to encourage skilled expatriate workers to remain longer in South Africa. Until now, they have been reluctant to stay for more than a three-year contract, or they run the risk of having worldwide assets taxed in South Africa and possibly being hit by tax in the host country and that of origin.
