Abstract

Although the effective handling of information is seen as one of the eight critical outcomes of the South African School Curriculum, many schools limit the teaching of information skills because of insufficient resources, such as a lack of teachers and of adequate media centres. As a result, public librarians have to teach information skills daily and in an informal way in order to support the development of children, especially those in the Upper Elementary Phase. This article reports on the design of an Information Literacy Instruction Programme for Upper Elementary Children for use in the public library. The design of the programme is based on the characteristics of Upper Elementary Children as well as on the components and design principles of an Information Literacy Instruction Programme.
