Abstract

There is no longer any doubt about cigarette smoking being harmful to the foetus. It reduces foetal growth and increases the risk of preterm delivery and abruptio placentae. The adverse effects are more pronounced in low socio-economic communities where diets are poor, vitamin intake low and alcohol intake in pregnancy excessive. The long-term effects of cigarette smoking on neonatal neurological development are still unknown. The harmful effects on the foetus will be explained and suggestions will be made how to help mothers to stop smoking.
