A birthmark refers to a non-inflammatory skin lesion present at birth. A birthmark is a source of apprehension for parents. Most birthmarks occur in isolation and are not indicative of underlying systemic disease. Intimate knowledge of the different forms of birthmarks is essential not only for the future of the patient, but also to allay parental fears and misconceptions. Only some of the more common birthmarks will be discussed.
