Abstract

Rotavirus infection is a common cause of severe gastroenteritis in infants and young children worldwide. Most children will have their first infection by the age of three years. In developing countries, most children are infected before one year of age. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately 527 000 children under five years of age die annually from rotavirus infections. In this article, we discuss rotavirus infection and focus on prevention through vaccination.
