Abstract

When hospitals were small and matron ruled, infection control was part of the corporate governance of the time. As hospitals have become more complex, procedures more invasive and public expectation greater, the potential for health care associated infection has risen sharply. This has been confounded by the enormous amount of antibiotics used and the increasing resistance in association with the microbial 'struggle for survival'.
